Hunger Banquet: A Meal to Change the World

One in seven people go hungry. But hunger is not about too many people and too little food. Our planet produces enough food to feed every woman, man, and child on earth. Hunger is about power. Its roots lie in inequalities in access to resources.

Few experiences bring to life these inequalities more powerfully than an Oxfam America Hunger Banquet® event. Unique and memorable, a Hunger Banquet allows participants to experience firsthand how our decisions affect others in the world.

At the event, participants randomly draw tickets that assign them to different income levels based on the latest poverty statistics. Each income level receives a corresponding meal–filling and nutritious or sparse and simple. Participants take on the roles of real people from around the world and share their experiences with others. While not all participants leave with full stomachs, most gain a new perspective on the root causes of hunger and poverty–and will feel motivated to do something to help.

InterReligious Task Force on Central America

IRTF is a Cleveland-based, nonprofit group that promotes peace and human rights in Central America and Colombia.  People of faith and conscience founded IRTF after the 1980 murder of four US church women (two from Cleveland) in El Salvador by US-trained soldiers.

IRTF calls together the people of northeast Ohio to walk in solidarity with oppressed peoples of Central America and Colombia, to achieve peace, justice, human rights, and systemic transformation through nonviolence.

Since 1981, IRTF has mobilized NE Ohioans to change US policies, corporate actions, and consumer behaviors that undermine this vision of nonviolent social change.
